Traditionally given as a gift to symbolize a long and happy life, this beautiful basket is made from sisal fibers. In an exacting process done entirely by hand, master women weavers in rural eSwatini use a needle and thread to tightly wrap brightly dyed sisal in stunning detail and pattern.

The sisal plant is in the Agave family and its fibers are strong. Each fiber is harvested, dried, hand dyed, dried again, then rolled against the weaver’s leg until the perfect thread is drawn out.

Weavers take an average of 30 hours to create an 8 inch basket which makes these some of the most labor intensive of all African baskets.
