Gourd art is one of the oldest of traditional Peruvian handicrafts. The decoration is produced by a combination of etching and burning, similar to wood burning. The outlines are carved freehand. A red-hot stick is used to burn and blacken areas of the surface. Finally, the gourd is rubbed with lime and protected with a layer of oil.
