Friends and loved ones will enjoy receiving this vintage peace quilt card picturing one of the many peace quilts created in Boise, Idaho.
The Boise Peace Quilt Project began in 1982. The inspiration for the Boise Peace Quilt Project (BPQ), says Anne Hausrath, came one Sunday morning in 1981 when she and her friend, Diane Jones, heard a Utah woman describe the devastating effects of desert nuclear tests near her town in the 1950's. After much reflection, the women decided to make a patchwork quilt, which they would send directly to the Soviet Union as a gesture of friendship. The decision, said Anne, ''was ironic, because neither of us had ever quilted before.''
The project produced more than a dozen quilts and involved many community volunteers. In 1984, the BQP stitched National Peace Quilt. Schoolchildren drew blocks and BQP members transferred them to quilt blocks. The BQP solicited senators to sleep under it for a night. Each senator was then asked to reflect on the damage that the Cold War was doing to the nation’s children and to write their thoughts in a journal that traveled with the quilt.
