Chulucanas is a Peruvian town famous for its predominantly black and white pottery. Chulucanas pottery was developed by using techniques from pre-Inca times. These unique ceramic pieces are thrown and fired then dipped in a liquid colored clay slip. The liquid clay is removed to create a design and then the piece is fired in the kiln for a second time. Mango leaves are used to smoke the piece and create a dark black color in the negative space. The piece can be smoked as many as four times to achieve the desired color. After firing the slip is chipped away to reveal the color underneath.
