This incredible recycled metal art form is uniquely Haitian. Steel oil drums are cut and the oil is burned off with the help of dried banana or sugar cane leaves. Once the metal has cooled the artist climbs inside the 55-gallon drum and uses their weight to open the barrel. The barrel is flattened, a design is drawn in chalk and the metal is cut into the desired shape. Details are pounded into the metal and then the piece is sanded, painted, and sealed.
